Overview

The Data Engineer will focus on data, data taxonomy, extraction, formatting, and displaying data to end users, and is responsible for managing the Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) process, governance and implementing technical processes and solutions to support those.

Principle accountabilities
  • Transferring data between transactional and warehouse solutions.
  • Documenting, diagramming, and visualising data objects, their relationships, systems, and processes.
  • Consulting with data management teams, stakeholders, architects, developers, and Heads of Department to gather requirements and solution knowledge.
  • Conducting data modelling, representing the relationship between various data objects.
  • Testing the performance of the designed solutions and data before and after extraction and load.
  • Presenting data visualisation dashboards and tooling to stakeholders based upon carefully considered functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Creating and maintaining data pipelines to securely transfer data within and outside the organisation.
  • Identifying weaknesses and troubleshooting any issues with the developed solution, transfer mechanism, and data integrity.
  • Being aware of emerging new technologies, identifying potential use cases and championing a data-driven approach to developing solutions.
  • Consider, relevant to your role, the needs and objectives of all our customers, including vulnerable customers, to ensure that they receive good outcomes.
Person specification

Knowledge, experience and qualifications

  • Knowledge of development languages such as JavaScript, Python and Go, and common data definition structures such as JSON and XML.
  • Experience with Kafka and knowledge of data visualisation best practices (Tableau, Pyramid, PowerBI, etc).
  • Extensive knowledge of data manipulation languages and frameworks such as SQL, across multiple platforms.
  • Experience applying best practices in design and software patterns, ensuring solutions are clear, maintainable, and understood by the whole team.
  • Experience as a Data Engineer or other data focussed development role preferred.
  • Understanding of data security best practices.

Scope
  • This is a full-time Monday to Friday role working an average 37.5 hours per week.
  • Hybrid flexible home/office working supported. There is a requirement to attend the office in Cumbria approximately twice a month or as frequently is required to meet the role requirements (expenses will be provided depending on your location).
  • Salary From £45,000 depending on experience, 25 days holiday plus public holidays, plus performance rated bonus, enhanced pension, and generous private medical, family, sickness and insurance benefits, and share schemes.
